Windows "Chrome" has gone missing

Postby irascian » Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:49 am

I've obviously hit some weird hot key combination because suddenly HTML validator has no Windows "chrome". No minimise, close or full-screen buttons.

It's making using it in conjunction with other programs almost impossible. I can close the program down using File|Exit but when I want to switch to another application I'm forced to use the Windows+M combination to minimise the app and get back to the taskbar where I can switch apps.

I can't see anything in the options that controls this. What am I missing? How do I get back to a proper Windows application with a top Windows bar with the usual Windows button.

I'm running the current version of HTML Validator on Windows 7 Ultimate with all the latest patches applied.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,

It looks like you are in "full screen" mode. Try pressing F11 to toggle that mode off.

That was it. Thanks :-) I need to find some time to go read the docs!

In trying to tidy things up I tried resetting various options, including Validation which warned me I would lose user-defined tags. I figured I'd not got any so clicke the "Proceed" or "Yes" button. Now Validation is broken with a "No user-defined tags found". Presumably these are not MY user-defined tags but some sort of file that ships with the install and which I've now lost. Do I need to do a complete uninstall/reinstall to get validation working again?

Just call me "the dumb user" ;-)

Hi Ian,

I'm glad that was it.

As for the config file, you can get the latest config file here (for v10.0x ONLY):
http://www.htmlvalidator.com/htmlvalV100cfg.zip

There should be instructions in the zip on how to install it. You may just need to replace/restore the *.cfg file you have now (the one which it sounds like you "reset") with the cfg file in the ZIP. The reset config function is an 'advanced' function for those who want to try creating their own config file, basically from scratch, which is a big undertaking. I don't think anyone has ever done that. :D

The config file replacement worked find. Nice clear, easy-to-follow instructions in the Read Me too.

Thanks for the excellent prompt support. It's great to have my favourite HTML5 editor back the way it was before I broke it.

Thanks again,
Ian
