Vanishes from desktop again

Postby billkruse » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:22 pm

I just upgraded to the new version and it vanishes from the desktop a couple of seconds after I open it. I've tried running it with the antivirus turned off, with just about every process running turned off in fact. Still happens. XP SP3. Anything else you need to know?

Thanks,

BB

Just for a point of reference, my upgrade worked fine. You might try installing again. How did you solve the same problem last time?

Ha! It's working now. OK last time I went through the other running programs and stopped them one by one after which CSE ran ok. This time Ihad to reboot after which it decided to start working. So I'm good thanks.

Are you using any of the programs listed in this topic?
https://www.htmlvalidator.com/CSEForum/ ... 1191#p5309

Usually when this happens it's a 3rd party program interfering.

So it was this program that was causing problems?

If so, then I will add it to the list of known programs that cause problems. Please confirm.

Thanks!

It was when I was using it, I wasn't using it yesterday however so I don't know what made the programme hinky. All was well after a reboot so maybe you should specify that as an essential.

Strange. If you find out what caused the problem (and you are 99%+ sure of it) then please let me know.

A reboot shouldn't be necessary after a CSE HTML Validator install, but reboots can always help solve the occasional 'weird' problem. :D

It's happening again! This time it only vanishes after I validate a page. If I don't validate the program will run happily but seconds after I validate, the program vanishes from the desktop.

Got it going by turning off javascript lint checking. Go figure! I went through the options asking myself what it wasn't important to be checking at this time and turned off the lint checking just to see if it made any difference. That did it. Thankfully I found this solution quite quickly.

This sounds like an anti-virus or anti-malware program is shutting CSE HTML Validator down because it doesn't like it when it runs the JavaScript checker.

By the way, I use Microsoft Security Essentials and haven't run across this problem.

I'm using MSE too. I can't update Malwarebytes but I can run it. I can update Spybot and run it, nothing shows, and I can scan with MSE and nothing shows. Something's clashing with something alright but what? Could be a background process and there's loads of them.

If you unload/disable all those anti-malware programs, does CSE HTML Validator work properly? If you have another computer, does it work on the other computer?

Some (most nowadays?) anti-malware programs now have "behavioral" detection techniques and they can shut down programs that seem to be (to them) behaving badly. For example, if you try to check a document with JSLint, then CSE HTML Validator runs it with Windows Script Host. To some over-zealous anti-malware programs, it might seem like bad behavior so it shuts the whole thing down.

Another possibility might be a hardware problem, like bad RAM, causing some memory fault, but I think it's more likely to be a software problem (something is getting in the way).

The recent updated version is simply unusuable on my machine. It vanishes after a few seconds. I've turned off every running application and a few services too, still happens :-(
