Edit button disappearing in IE7

This bug has been occurring for some time on various successive computers of mine: the "Edit" button in Explorer's toolbar is grayed out. Until now, it has been a rare issue (once every 10 days or so); but now it happens 90% of the time.

In IE Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs CSE HTML Validator is correctly listed as default HTML editor.

I can still open my internally stored files with CSE HTML Validator by right-clicking on them and selecting "Edit with CSE HTML Validator"; but I much prefer the Explorer's toolbar button.

The bug occurs both on internally stored pages and on live pages on the web. I am only trying to edit / open html pages.

Any idea how to fix this?

I use XP Pro SP2 and IE7, both with all latest updates. My CSE HTML Validator Standard v8.04 is also up to date (a registered version). I have Raid0.

I've also experienced this.

I never found a worthwhile explanation of what was happening.

The only thing, I found, that ever worked to any degree was clearing caches in the browser. Unfortunately the impact is not permanent and I don't think it fixes all pages.

It's unsatisfactory, so I'd also be pleased if somebody here gets to the root of it, and lets us know.

I have studied this bug and here are more details.

- Document 1: "Edit" button works without problem. It is a simple html file stored on my disk. It has only html, no links, images, css or any script. Size 4,912 bytes

- Document 2: "Edit" button works... until I mouseover my menu image links

As soon as I mouseover that, the "Edit" button is grayed out. That document is a rather simple html file with links, images, css and javascript is only used for some links. Size 38,740 bytes

I'm not aware of other browsers with an edit feature like Internet Explorer, though I haven't investigated it much. I typically use Firefox and I don't think there is any edit feature in there, at least by default (if there is, I can't find it). Maybe one could be added with an add-on though.

So I think this is an IE only issue.
