Limiting browser type

Postby Lea724 » Wed May 04, 2005 8:55 pm

Hi, I'm a brand new user to CSE HTML Validator, using version 6.53. After validating a page with a lot of code, I found that the page looks beautiful in Firefox, but *horrible* in Internet Explorer.

The person who referred me to using the program recommended that I set up the option to where it will specifically check for IE-related code problems. I was unable to figure out how to do that, so I did a search here in this forum, and in the older forum, eventually coming to this thread:

http://www.htmlvalidator.com/phorum/rea ... 353&t=1352

It gave a lot of insight in what I should be looking for (configuration editor), but I can't find the configuration editor on the program. I again spoke with the person who recommended the program to me, and she said that in her version (which is slightly lower than mine), it was underneath the Options tab at the top. But I don't have that on mine.

Please, can anybody help me?

Also, while I'm thinking of it, sometimes the message window will give me a message that gets cut off when it gets too long (presumably that's the reason. I can't imagine it would just be fickle on its own). Is there any way to increase the character size, so it will allow me to view extra long messages?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Amanda,

I apologize for the delay in responding. I was on vacation until May 9th. I am now back at work and working to answer the backlog of messages and emails.

The Configuration Editor is only available in the professional edition, but you don't need that edition. Goto Options->Validator Engine Options, Flags tab and make sure that flag 1 is checked. However, that flag is more useful when a page displays fine in Internet Explorer but not another browser (not the other way around). These messages should appear in the Grouped tab. For more information about the flags, please visit

Also, I'd be interested in seeing the HTML of a page that works in Firefox but not in IE. I may be able to determine the cause and add additional messages to CSE about potential problems in IE. Please send this page to me via attachment at support@htmlvalidator.com.

The message window is for this purpose. Make sure it is visible by making sure there is a check for it in View->Windows->Message. It will display the entire message when you click on the message.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for the info. I went in to check flag 1, and it was checked. I'll bookmark the configuration link. Thank you!

I no longer have the HTML for that, as I was finally able to figure out how to fix it so that it displayed properly in both browsers. I don't know if it would help, but I could send you the fixed code, if you wanted.

Amanda,

If you have an idea of what the problem was, then please send me the fixed code and what you think the problem was. I may be able to reproduce the problem and see if it would be possible to add a new check to CSE that could prevent the problem for others. If not, then no need to worry about it. :-)

Thank you.
