can't quit

Postby roedygr » Thu Nov 26, 2009 5:25 pm

I get errors like this fairly often. This time is was particularly bad. I had to kill it with the task scheduler.
See the attached screenshot.

CSE had already quit, but kept popping up new error messages every few seconds.

artcomdolphin.html is a document without errors that I had validated on a previous session, but failed to close.

Hello,

I'm sorry for the trouble. I have seen this too occasionally. I think it occurs if you leave CSE HTML Validator open for a long time. Did you have it open for a long time? I believe it is an issue with a component CSE HTML Validator v9 uses and should be addressed/fixed in the next major release (v10).

I usual mode of running the validator is to do a batch validate of all recently changed docs. Sometimes this overflows the limit.

Then I manually paste in the various documents one by one validating them. Then I exit.

I am not sure if keeping the validator up even longer than this is correlated with the problem.

It might have something to do with some sort of extensive link checking continuing on in the background.

Hi Roedy,

Please email me if you'd like to try a pre-release of CSE HTML Validator v10 BETA. I think it fixes the problem.

Access violation at exit of program

Postby marcb » Sun Dec 06, 2009 4:23 am

With the latest release of CSE, I an experiencing access violation errors while exiting the program after running a batch validation. Normal usage of the program does not seem to cause the error.
The validation runs normally. I close the batch wizard window and then I close the main program. At that moment, pop-up error windows appear. In general, they are completely empty. Clicking on them results in an additional pop-ups and so several times. Most of the time, clicking several times will finally end the program. However today, the program got in some kind of loop and finally displayed the message "Access viaolation at address 6016CDA4. Read of address 6016CDA4." I had to kill the program via the task manager.

I merged your topic with a previous topic about what is probably the same issue. Please email me if you'd like to try a v10 pre-BETA.

Since acquiring a new computer in early 2010 with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium I've almost always had to use the Task Manager to kill the program when I want to exit it. I am using version 10.0211 (Pro) on a quad-core AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition with 8 gigs of memory. All other software on the PC works fine. Errors which I receive resemble images posted by others (above).

Just now, I notice the About window in CSE indicates 32-bit, so maybe I should be looking for a 64-bit version to download or maybe CSE is strictly 32-bit

I'm sorry for the trouble. Please email me at support at htmlvalidator dot com if you'd like to try a V11 BETA to see if the problem is resolved.

For now, only 32-bit versions are available. It's possible that a 64-bit version will be available in the future, but it's not planned for V11. The 32-bit version should work fine.

unable to shutdown

Postby roedygr » Wed Sep 14, 2011 9:01 pm

Stopping is better than before but several times I day I have to go into the task manager to shutdown HTML Validator.

I would be happy to run some special version of the program with additional logging to help you figure out why this is happening.
I am using 10.0211 32 bit pro.

Hello,

I don't have a special debugging logging version but would you like to try a V11 BETA to see if this problem still happens? If so, then please email or PM me. Thank you.

I still have to use task manager to stop HTML Validator about three times a day. the most annoying are the ones where it honks every second until you kill it.

Yes please. I would be happy to try beta code to track this down.

Thanks! At this point I think it is best to wait for the free v11 public BETA, which I hope to release at the end of the week. If the BETA does not resolve the problem, then please let me know. Also please let me know some details about what you were doing in the program when this problem occurred (did you use the Batch Wizard, for example, or the Open from the Web function or the Pretty Print/Fix/HTML Tidy tool, etc.). This may help me track it down. Unfortunately this problem has been very difficult to find.

CSE HTML Validator v11 is now released. In the release version, v11.0000, I found and corrected another issue that might be causing this shutdown bug, but because it is difficult to reproduce, I don't know for sure... therefore, if anyone encounters a shutdown error/access violation in v11.0000 or greater, then I'd really like to know so please post it here. Hopefully this issue has finally been fixed.

I'm getting this same issue still with v 11 - it happens when I have had the Batch Wizard open, not sure if it does otherwise.

I had this in earlier versions, though I think I get fewer error pop-ups before Windows steps in now, 3 this time whereas previously they seemed to just keep on coming until I shut it with Task Manager. It may be when Validator has been open for some time. I'll keep an eye on how it is in future.
