Freezes while Creating and Initializing Shell

Postby chadhanna » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:16 am

When I start CSE HTML Validator Standard 9.0302 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 it sits for two or three minutes while 'Creating and Initializing Shell' appears in the status bar at the foot of the window. I've checked the FAQ and both Selected Folders in the Registry are pointing to folders on local drives.

Anyone have ideas on how to proceed? Could this be related to something like Antivirus (AVG Pro 9.0.787) - not using any fancy firewall.

Hello,

Something may be holding it up... perhaps some network drive or other folder path or type of drive (perhaps caused by a bad driver). You could try disabling your anti-virus and see if that has any effect. Also, try closing the Shell windows, exiting CSE HTML Validator, and seeing if that helps.

Thank you, not sure exactly what 'shell' windows are. No cmd windows open. No association with Anti-virus. If I login and then start up HTML validator it starts quite quickly.

I think there is some other application e.g. FTP client, Windows Explorer that causes the problem but I haven't isolated it yet. More then.

Hello,

I'm referring to View->Windows->Shell 1 and View->Windows->Shell 2. Try making sure those are not checked, then exit CSE HTML Validator and reload it to see if it starts faster.

It sounds like it may have something to do with a network drive that it can't connect to if you don't login. Not showing the Shell windows may help as they may be trying to access the drives that are causing the delay.

OK, thank you for the specifics. I will try it later, but there are no network drives, only some removable drives (memory card reader) that are currently unmounted which might be similar.

Thanks for the help, I'll report back when I've confirmed what's happening.
