Using bullet characters

Postby ajtruckle » Sun Apr 04, 2010 12:12 pm

Hello

I use bullet characters in my code. But I get this warning:

Error in line 456 at character 53: Found an invalid character reference "•". Characters between 128 and 159 (inclusive) are typically Microsoft specific and are reserved for control characters in the standard Internet character sets. They are undefined in HTML and illegal in XHTML. Therefore they should not be used in HTML/XHTML documents. Consider using "•" instead. If, for some reason, you still want to use character references 128-159, then you can set an option to allow them in the Validator Engine Options.

I see that • also works. Why is this so important? I can change ofcourse ...

Hello,

Because these characters/code points are Microsoft specific, they may not display properly on some browsers, especially browsers running on non-Windows platforms. I will add this info to the message.

I tried to use them but they showed as normal text characters. In my situation I am using a web browser control in a program which is IE derived so I think things will work differently. So I reverted back.

It would be nice if some of your options were projecr specific rather than global.

Hi Andrew,

I see. You can import/export the Validator Engine Options in the Validator Engine Options Dialog, so you could simulate having different settings for different projects. In the project with your HTML component, you could uncheck the option that disallows those characters, then export those options.
