Many errors

Postby ajtruckle » Thu May 27, 2010 10:37 am

Hello!

I am trying out a software application that converts a CHM file to a website. I have uploaded the results to my website:

http://www.publictalksoftware.co.uk/pub ... elpOnline/

When I run this through the validator I seem to get a lot of errors.

Are these bogus errors? Should I be mentioning anything to the software vendor?

Thank you for clarifying. Visually I am happy with the results of this software application (the convertor)

Hi Andrew,

I looked at the issues and using a "body" section after the head section eliminates most of the error and warning messages. You might mention this to the developer, as well as using a DOCTYPE since there is none... but as for this affecting people's ability to see the site, I don't think it is serious. What might be more of a concern is requiring JavaScript to view the site.

Hi

Thanks for checking. True, but I don't know of any other decent CHM to website convertors at modest cost. Unless you do. :)

The basic and free HTML Workshop from Microsoft, which compiles html files into a chm file, can also extract the html files from a chm file if that's of any interest to you. It won't include the contents, index, search, or favorites functionality of the chm file but you can get the html files.

Sorry, I don't... unless Help & Manual is considered "modest cost". I wouldn't call it cheap though... but it may do what you want (not sure on that though). It's what I use for CSE HTML Validator's help file and online help:

Hi John

I have the source files as I use Html Help workshop to prepare the CHM. I just did not want to re-invent the wheel for for making a workable website variation.

Hello again!

I contacted the author and they made some adjustments to the software. Here is the new website:

http://www.publictalksoftware.co.uk/pub ... elpOnline/

Also, this is what they said:

Hi, this is fixed, but not a critical bug as BODY tag not required when FRAMESET tag used. So we added it to noscript page only.

Do you think this is OK now?

Hello,

I'm sorry for the delay.

The short answer is: it depends on what you mean by "OK". I checked the first page only, and it seems to have come up fine in my browser (Firefox). It also seems to work in Opera and IE. I always recommend checking sites in all the major browsers.

As for technically & strictly correct, it falls short... as there is not even a DOCTYPE... and inserting HTML into documents with JavaScript can cause miscellaneous issues.

But if it works in the popular browsers, then it may be "good enough". :D
