Last open file unreadable after crash

Postby heddesheimer » Wed Dec 15, 2010 1:15 am

I love using TopStyle for my CSS projects but unfortunately I can't use it after upgrading to the latest Version 4. Here is why:

When I open a style sheet file and work with TopStyle, all works fine if my machine doesn't crash. Unfortunately, my iMac (yes it's a Mac) crashes 2-3 times a week, I have TopStyle projects open in my virtual Windows, so that the Mac also shuts of the Windows portion running on the machine. I guess this would be the same issue if I use TopStyle on a "pure" windows machine, and since my Windows machines usually crash once per day, this will leave me in the same situation.

After the machine crashed, I can usually boot it up again and open all my files again. But if I open the last CSS file that I had open in TopStyle 4, I just see a lot of garbage. It looks pretty much like a binary file and I can't open it with any other editor either. This is reproducable and I've lost several hours of work already, because I had to revert to an older backup file. This is because the machine crash not only destroys the last unsaved changes that I made to the file, but the whole CSS file.

I wonder if there is a setting in TopStyle to prevent garbling the CSS file when TopStyle cannot be closed normally.

This sounds like a corruption problem with your Windows virtualization software or something like that. I doubt it has anything to do with TopStyle itself. I'm not sure what a solution might be, except to save a backup copy on a Mac drive or USB stick as then I think it would be very strange for it to get corrupted there.

I also find it strange that your Windows machine crashes once per day. I very, very, rarely have an outright crash on any of my Windows machines. I think I had one blue-screen crash on my main Windows 7 x64 machine in several months, and it was quite surprising because it is usally very reliable. I even run lots of programs on that system and have 5 monitors hooked up to it (I think it was a driver bug). I wonder if your Windows hardware is defective (like bad RAM) or maybe you are running an old OS that is less stable, though Vista and Windows 7 have been very stable for me. Windows XP less stable, but still much better than Windows 9x and Windows Me from "the good old days".

Thanks Albert for the reply. It's just strange that this corruption is only with TopStyle. If I use any other editor (I usually use psPad) I never have problems to open the files after a crash.

Thanks anyway
