Any one notice freezing?

Postby mobotech » Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:47 pm

I"m not sure why, but I'm frequently getting freezing when working with topstyle. It lasts about 30 sec. and starts every 10 minutes or so. Any one else has these problems?

Windows 7
Mozilla Firefox for Preview
Web coding with html/css.

Is "Firebug-mode" turned on?

I've been annoyed by the freezing effect for some time now. What's "Firebug Mode"? If it's the problem how do I turn it off?

There's a button named "Firebug-mode" on the Preview pane toolbar. If it is down, then click it and turn it off.

If "Firebug-mode" isn't to blame, maybe someone has reproducible steps? I would love to reproduce and fix this.

Thanks, Stefan.

Hi Stefan. Thanks for the clarification. I never noticed the Firebug Mode button because I keep the Output window docked on the right.

In any case, Firebug Mode is not on so, sadly, that's not it.

Whenever the freezing occurs I notice that the Disk light is on and flashing away like mad. As if the program is writing something? Or checking something from the disk? Whatever this procedure does, its priority must be set to High - above the display update and editing functions, anyway.

I'll update this thread if I notice anything else.

Thanks
Jim

I have the same problem here - and have had for a really long time, through many versions.

I'm wondering if its something to do with rendering - and specifically something like jquery, prototype.js and other external javascript libraries.

Have you tried resetting your settings? (Options > Reset Settings).

Also, some anti-virus "solutions" (such as McAfee, for example) are notorious for slowing TopStyle down. You might want to exclude TopStyle from McAfee (or whatever other anti-virus "solution" you're running).

Last but not least, you might want to consider closing the Preview pane (Ctrl+D), or try some other rendering engine (for example: Mozilla Gecko instead of IE).

Hi Stefan

Well I can't believe the difference - like night and day.

I reset options as you suggested.
I closed Topstyle
I added the program files\topstyle folder to the exclusion list in Microsoft Security Essentials.
I restarted - and it's FAST.

I've opened a few files - both recent CSS and HTML files.

As I've just reset, the preview is showing and using the IE rendering engine - and it's still fast.

I'll post back in here if things go slow again.

Anyone else care to try if they're suffering the freezing/super slow speed?

Question now is - how do we get this to be reproducible for you to fix for everyone else!

:-)

Thank you for this thread!

I've just added both TopStyle and CSE HTML validator to the Kaspersky list of trusted applications.

TopStyle and CSE HTML validator run much faster. TopStyle used to freeze on my PC as well.

Anti-virus "solutions" are ruining my business. Oh well.

They are hurting mine as well... along with anti-spam "solutions". :(

Sometimes CSE HTML Validator doesn't even run... just disappears on the user's screen, thanks to the anti-malware software they're using.

Hi Srefan

I have that 'Firebug-mode is on' message but the Firebug icon is grayed out and inactive. If I click it it reamins grayed out.

Any ideas why that is?

Regards

Nick

Please open a CSS document (not a HTML document), and try again.
