find all in files

Hello! I searched the forum, sorry if this was suggested already (it seems not): an option to search in files would be great, or at least search in all open files. Actually I miss an option to search and replace in files. Sometimes I revert to the old HomeSite just for that!

Hello,

It's a great feature but not really something that you'd expect an "HTML Validator" to do. However, the CSE HTML Validator's Editor does have a "Search->Replace in All Open Documents" feature you may want to try.

I also used the HomeSite search and replace feature in the past, but it seemed problematic on Vista/Windows 7.

I recommend a program called Replace Text here:
http://www.htmlvalidator.com/htmlval/resources.html

You may want to try it. I think I've run into some issues with it (like locking up/freezing) but have had successes as well. It does warn about "known problems with some Windows 7 installations", whatever that means. It also can be a bit complicated to use at first, but seems like it is fairly powerful.

If anyone else can recommend a better/more reliable standalone search & replace program, then I'd like to find one.

UPDATE: if you just need to search, you may want to try "findstr" on Windows. That's what I use when programming and I want to search my source code files for something.

Textpad does a pretty good search of specified file types in a folder, including subfolders.

Thank you both for your help. Meanwhile, I found this great small utility that does just that, and does it also in utf-8 files: http://www.replace-in-files.com/. My problem is solved!
