Microsoft Windows characters in positions 130-159

Postby Daniel Lacroix » Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:26 am

Hi Albert,

Would it be possible for CSE to check for these windows characters, since they will be displayed differently in browsers on different platforms. An option in the Validator 2 tab could be added.

For example when you validate the following page: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/cio-dpi/index_f.asp, W3C finds 3 errors

Thanks

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Be sure you have unchecked Allow numeric references 128-159 in the Validator 1[b] tab of the [b]Validator Engine Options, but that will only check for character references.

Another thing you could do is check the Check for high ASCII characters option in the Validator 2 tab, but that will check for all characters over 127.

I will look into adding an option like the above "high ASCII" check but to only check for 128-159.

Albert,

Does the new Beta v8 can check for characters like the — (Em Dash)?

Which was the idea of my original posting ... to find windows characters in the 130-159 range written as Dagger, En Dash, Em Dash, Small Tilde, etc.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, it should. Make sure the new Check for characters 128-159 option in the Validator 2 tab of the Validator Engine Options is checked. By default this should already be checked.

Albert,

Sorry about this ... my setup was only showing the errors. I see that the message for these characters are set as warnings.

Thanks for this new addition to CSE.

Daniel.

You're welcome. Don't forget that you can easily change the message to an error if you'd like by right-clicking on it and choosing Options for this Message->Change Message Type to->Error. You probably already know this, but others may not know how easy this is to do. :-)
