Inexistent bookmark

Postby Daniel Lacroix » Mon Apr 10, 2006 1:40 pm

Hi Albert,

Did you know that if we use the filename in a bookmark, CSE will not find the error of an inexistent bookmark.

Try to validate this page http://www.informationmanagement.gc.ca/bookmark-test.htm.

Thanks.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, CSE HTML Validator doesn't currently check bookmarks/internal links that have a filename specified with the internal link. This is because it would require downloading and scanning the filename for the anchor.

Missing internal links like this are NOT detected
Code: Select all
<a href="somefile.html#missing">

But these should be detected
Code: Select all
<a href="#missing">

It is possible that this could be improved so that if the filename can be determined to be the page that is being checked, then it would function the same as if the page wasn't specified at all. But in this case, I would think it would be better not to specify the filename at all.

Am I understanding the issue correctly?

Albert,

As a best practice years ago, we opted to put the filename in a bookmark since older version of Netscape required it to work properly.

From now on, we will no longer put the filename in a bookmark, since it works fine with the recent versions of web browsers.

Thanks,
Daniel.
