v8 BETA Crashes Firefox

Postby annerykiln » Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:24 pm

v8 Beta is crashing out with an error message about a DLL file acces conflict.

Firefox also crashes (I have the FF CSE Validator extension).

Had to disable the extension to log on here.

Is there a solution apart from uninstalling v8 at the moment?

Hi Marten,

I can reproduce the problem and will be looking into this.

The Firefox extension uses the DLL in the Windows system directory, so you can either remove the DLL from there (csevalidator.dll) or replace it with the v7.0 DLL. For example, copy csevalidatorV70.dll in the directory where you have CSE HTML Validator v7.0 installed to your Windows system directory and rename it csevalidator.dll. The Firefox extension should then work and not crash Firefox.

NOTE: If you uninstall v8.0 to fix this (which you don't have to do), then you'll need to reinstall a previous version of CSE HTML Validator to get a DLL back into the Windows system directory for the extension (or most other third party software) to function. Or, you can manually copy and rename the DLL from a current installation. Be sure to rename the DLL csevalidator.dll (without the version) when it is copied to the Windows system directory.

Is anyone else having this crash problem? From the reports I've received so far, it doesn't look like it but I'd like to know.

I am thinking this is a video driver bug. I believe bad video drivers can cause crashes in comctl32.dll.

Are you running all the latest updates including your video drivers?

v8 BETA Crashes Firefox

Postby annerykiln » Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:28 pm

Yep - as it happens I know all my video drivers and graphics card drivers wer e up-to-date two weeks ago.

I do have a dual-monitor system running two monitors side by side to produce a resolution of 3200 x 1200.

Currently I'm at a loss for this. I still suspect it's a video driver issue. I'll watch for more crash reports and see if others have this too. For the record, what video card and drivers are you using? Per your report, it looks like you're using 6.0.2900.2180 of comctl32.dll. That's the same version as on my system.

I believe this has been fixed in CSE HTML Validator Pro v8.00 BETA 1C (now available). Feel free to report your results with the new beta and the Firefox extension.

Just installed Beta 3 and had to disable the Firefox extension. Replaced the system dll file with csevalidatorV70.dll from v7 and it worked again. I had not had problems with the Firefox extension under Beta 1 or 2. Error message I'm seeing is "An exception (C0000005) occurred during DllEntryPoint or DllMain in module: C:\Windows\system32\csevalidator.dll"

Is anyone else having trouble with BETA 3 (v7.9930) and the Firefox extension? I tested this on one of my computers and it seemed to work normally.

Ken, what is the size of the v8.0 BETA 3 DLL file on your system? It should be less than 1500 KB. If it's not, then please re-download BETA 3 and reinstall it.

It's 1448kb. I just installed Beta 3 right over top of Beta 2...not even checking whether there were any cautions or guidance to do otherwise. Would a fresh download/clean install be worthwhile? Or any other info I can provide?

Thanks,

Ken

You should be able to install v8.0 BETA 3 on top of any other v8.0 BETA installation.

You could try redownloading and reinstalling. I think it's worth a try. Just to be sure, you may also want to reboot your computer before reinstalling as sometimes that still solves problems. Please let me know what happens.

Tried another reboot, installed a fresh copy of Beta 3 and a fresh copy of the Firefox extension but still seeing the same error. Also tried uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling but no change.

Any ideas I might try will be welcome.

Thanks,

Ken

Same problem as Ken

Postby CaryD » Sun Oct 01, 2006 7:53 pm

Using Windows 2000, Beta 2 worked fine with the firefox extension, but Beta 3 required me to remove the extension.

I replaced the csevalidator.dll file with the one from version 7 to see how that would work. Firefox did run with the extension installed, but the extension itself did nothing, just displaying a ghosted "H" icon.
