Check Only These Links

Postby Daniel Lacroix » Tue Aug 08, 2006 12:34 pm

Hi Albert,

In testing the limit the links checking to a domain I found ...
For these sections
- Grand Totals Report : bad links to outside domain would be included in the totals
- 1.Documents that have bad links : Documents links that contain outside bad links would be listed
- Link Reports : Document that contains outside bad links would be listed without the details

Can you have a look.

Thanks.
Daniel.

Albert,

Here is more info.

After more testing I found the following ...
Why I am getting the desired results while manually executing the batch wizard and not while using the cmdlineprocessor?

Using the cmdlineprocessor I was using the following to produce 2 reports, 1 for the internal links and 1 for the external links.

-b7 c:\validator\v800b1\www-PSM-Portal-links-ext.lst
-b7 c:\validator\v800b1\www-PSM-Portal-links-int.lst
-q

To get the desired results I had to insert a -q in between the lists.
-b7 c:\validator\v800b1\www-PSM-Portal-links-ext.lst
-q
-b7 c:\validator\v800b1\www-PSM-Portal-links-int.lst
-q

Hi Daniel,

I think I understand better what the issue is with the additional information you provided. I'm thinking this has to do with the link cache which will remember the status of previous link checks until the program is shut down. While limiting link checking to certain links, it will still display the link information for other links if the link has previously been checked and the status is already in the link cache.

Does this sound like what is happening?

I could add an option in the Target List Options tab option to automatically clear the link cache upon each processing of the target list. Do you think this would resolve the issue?

Albert,

Yes, this is what is happening ...
I reversed the order for the mentioned reports and it was the other report that was now not giving the desired results!

It's up to you about adding an extra option. I can use the -q for the cmdlineprocessor.

Note that some explanation of this behavior could be added in the help file to alert users, when they are using the Don't check these links and Check ONLY these links for creating separate internal and external bad links reports for the same domain in the same batch job.

Thanks Daniel,

I've added this note to the documentation:

NOTE: The status of some link checks may show that a link is good or bad even when you may not expect this to show because of the Don't check these links or Check ONLY these links option. This may be because the link was previously checked during a different job and is stored in the link cache. If this is the case and you don't want this to happen, then be sure to clear the link cache before processing a target list or to exit CSE HTML Validator and reload it (this will also clear the link cache).

Thanks Albert for this addition to the Validator.

It will facilitate the fixing of internal bad links since we no longer will have to go thru a big list of bad links.

The external bad links listing we be in a separate report.

Daniel.
