Page weight

Postby Albert Wiersch » Fri Nov 16, 2007 4:34 pm

How important is a "page weight" feature to you? It would add up the size of the document and all the linked files that would typically be downloaded to view the page (like images, style sheets, etc).

I don't think people are as concerned about "page weight" as they were in the past when more people used slower connections.

However, I have seen some very badly designed pages that have huge (with regards to bytes - not resolution) images linked to them.

I am considering adding this to CSE HTML Validator v9.0 in conjunction with the link checker.

While it's true that the impact of page weight has changed, I still think it important.

I still analyse it on a new web site. That analysis is usually a bit rough as I don't analyse every page. (There's two parts, page weight if it's the first page from the site page and page weight if it's not (difference is cached content).)

For me it would certainly be useful.

I still regularly see sites where simple awareness of page weight would likely have reduced unacceptable performance, at little cost to the developer.

Add my vote for weighting.

I anticipate most of those that would look at my web pages may not have the fastest connectivity. I know some have dial-up, some use a sat link where the total volume is limited.

Even using DSL I still run into web sites that are almost to slow for my attention span. It seems that those that don't have a server with the needed connectivity also have the weightiest pages.

I also would find something like this very useful Albert. Actually I do a rough calculation manually now of my more complicated pages, so an automatic one would be a time saver.

Thanks all. I will further investigate this. It seems like it would be a good feature to add.

Absolutely. I use it regularly. It would be great to have it automated.
