The missing key is probably normal for IE 7 (I think I read that somewhere--that it is not there by default in IE 7).

I have checked with CSE HTML Validator v9.02 BETA 2B (hope to release it soon) that it works on my Vista x64 system. It adds the registry keys when needed and deletes them when the viewer is restored.

Looking forward to trying it.

Does it update the registry without running as administrator?

There's minimal changes between Windows7 and Vista so just about anything that works in Vista, should work there. I would think the IE8 browser would break more things tho.

No, this change requires admin privileges or the OS won't let it change the needed registry settings.

Yes, I think you are right. Windows 7 is suppose to not break much (if anything) from Vista... but IE 8 probably breaks a lot more.

Are these the keys, the current beta modifies?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

This does work now with the current beta (9.02 beta 2A) in Vista x64 SP1 using IE7, when CSE is run as an administrator (right-click on the shortcut, run as administrator, then "make source viewer in IE").

This does not work with IE8 RC1 (the latest public download), which always wants to use it's own source viewer for some reason. I need to research this in the IE forum this weekend and bug this, if it hasn't already.

Hmmm... what do you think of this? http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2007/0 ... ditor.aspx

FWIW, nothing on Connect or the newsgroup, but I did bug it there.

If you have IE8 installed, try this:

Press F12 to pull up developer tools.
On the window that pops up, go to File... Customize IE View Source... Other, browse for CSE, usually:

C:\Program Files (x86)\HTMLValidator90\cse90.exe (for 64 bit OS)
C:\Program Files\HTMLValidator90\cse90.exe (32 bit OS)

Once I did this I can view source in CSE now.
