IE Source Viewer in Vista x64

Postby RSteinwand » Fri Dec 05, 2008 8:37 pm

Hi Albert.

I was able to set the IE source in 64 bit Vista with v.8 and now with a new computer with Vista Ultimate and a new install of CSE v 9.01, it no longer works.

I click on Make Source Viewer in IE... choose "open in editor" and it appears ok (no warnings)... "a restart may be needed". But when I click on view source in IE, I get just the source (no validation) and it opens in notepad.

Is there another setting some where? I see no warnings in the event viewer.

Hello,

I'm sorry for the delay in responding.

I may have reproduced this problem on my Vista 64 bit machine. I'm going to have to do some more research on this and try to get back to you at a later date.

This issue occurs with 9.01 and 32 bit Windows 7 build 7000 (which includes IE8) as well.

I believe I've fixed this for the upcoming v9.02 update. It seems there is another registry location that is used when using a 64-bit OS.

Nice find. I was aware of the wow64 folder structure, but not the registry keys. I remember looking in the registry when we first implemented support for Vista x64, but I don't think it was this one.

Hi Albert.
Neither "view source editor" node exists on my computer:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

Just checked on my work x86 Vista SP1 and this key is empty:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor

(value not set)

... yet it still opens in CSE when I click on view source.

I'm going to do more research on this issue.

RSteinwand, I would recommend you search the registry and delete any "view source editor" keys. I think that will get you back to default (Notepad).

If you delete the following keys, does View Source in IE open in Notepad?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor

RSteinwand,

Were you able to get this to work in the current BETA if you ran CSE HTML Validator as administrator?

I don't have access to Vista x64 at the moment, I upgraded it to Windows 7 x64, build 7000 (beta 1). View source gives me IE8's developer tool version of view source, even tho IE says to open it in Word. Ran CSE as admin, set CSE to be the default, reopened IE8 and still opens in IE8's viewer.

When I posted that bug previously, running as admin didn't work either. This is also the same one that didn't have those keys you posted.

OK, thanks for the feedback. At this time I cannot support Windows 7 and IE 8. I have made some further improvements to this function, however. I will do some more testing on my Vista x64 machines. I believe it does work (at least on my system) when the program is run as administrator but will do the further testing.

Hi Albert. I think the problem is neither "view source editor" node exists on my computer (as I posted above):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

Is it possible changing to the default editor in a previous version, deleted them?

I don't think it should matter. If those keys aren't there, IE should use the default (which is Notepad - at least in IE7 and below). And if those keys aren't there, CSE HTML Validator should create them. When the IE viewer is restored back to the IE default, then they can be deleted.

Notepad is all I get with my 64 bit Vista. The entire "view source editor" node (I think that's the term) is missing.

Guess I'll need to see if I can change it to something other than default (like Word or Excel) from the browser and if it works, see where that value is stored. I'll try it in Win7 x64 for now since that's what I have installed. Later when I roll back to my Vista x64 image, I can recheck.

Maybe there's a permission on that node that prevents the change.
