NT authentication iffy

Postby adbw » Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:52 am

I thought NT authentication was working ok with the batch validation but I guess I just recently tried a larger site and on deeper URLs the userid and password does not seem to be passed through

Can you give me more details where it wasn't passed through? Directions to reproduce the problem would be very helpful. Also, you may want to try checking Send usernames and passwords when only domains match in the Editor Options, General 2 Tab.

I think that change might have fixed my problem although I am not positive because now I am getting this error after making that change in editor options:

access violation at address 0043163A in module 'cse70.exe'. read of address 00000054.

Hi Albert,

I am now doing some validation on our internal website that uses NT authentication.

Can you confirm that when a page gets validated using the open from the web dialog box a username and password needs to be supplied for every validation since I do not want to store it in the registry.

Thanks.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

If you do not want the passwords stored in the registry, then make sure that Enable password security is checked in Options->Editor Options->General 1 Tab.

Then when you use the Open from the Web Dialog Box, only the usernames should be available. You'll need to enter the password every time.

Hi Albert,

When doing validation with NT authentication, should I be able to check the links as well?

I can do the page validation, but I am getting an 401 - Access Denied for all the links within that domain.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

I believe it should work. Are you using the Batch Wizard? If you are working in the editor, then you may want to investigate the "Send usernames and passwords when only domains match" option in the "General 2" tab of Options->Editor Options as that option may have an effect depending on what links you are checking and the URL of the source page.

If this doesn't help, can you tell me how to reproduce this issue with a page I can access for testing purposes?

Thank you.

Hi Albert,

I was using the internal web browser for page validation when I notice, that all links on the domain had a status of 401 - Access Denied.

To make it work while using the Open from the web box, I needed the following:
- Click the Use username and password
- The "Send usernames and passwords when only domains match" had to be clicked from the Editor Options, General2 tab
- if the Enable password security was not clicked from the Editor Options, General1 tab, then I had to enter it everytime

Now, I would like to check the links, while using the Batch Wizard. Since the only bad links that gets reported in my reports, are the ones from non NT authenticated sites.

Before I do the page validation and links checks, I download the site, and do some prep work. The links check probably doesn't work since it is comparing the current page on a hard disk to a page on an NT authenticated domain. Or is the username and password sent for only an URL target, where in my case it's a folder ...

For example:
NT domain name : www.ntdomain.com

Hard disk path : c:\webs\www.ntdomain.com\PageToCheck.asp

Unfortunately, this site is our intranet, and is not available on the outside.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, in order for the link check to work with a username and password, CSE HTML Validator needs to get the source page from a URL using a username and password (by using File->Open from the Web or a URL target in the Batch Wizard and not the integrated web browser). It should then be able to use that same username and password when checking links. In other cases, the link checker will not know what username and password to use to check the links.

Does this make sense? :-)

Albert,

Then would it be possible, in a future release, to be able to pass, the following 3 pieces of information, when the target is a folder:
- the domain name
- the username to use
- the password to use

Daniel.

Yes, this sounds like a good feature to consider for a future version. Thanks for the suggestion.
