v10 BETA 2B Test

Postby MikeGale » Mon Feb 22, 2010 9:05 pm

Hi Albert,

I just ran the 2B version over a few sites using the batch tool.

Observations:

1) I get a message

Missing media query.
@import url(***.css);

Where the closing bracket is highlighted in red. I haven't seen this one before that I can recall. I think it happens every instance of an @import url.

2) The colour / brightness messages are going to remain annoying. I could switch the check off completely and be done with it. An approach that lets me mark sheets/items where it's deliberate would be better. That way I can catch sheets where there is a real problem.

Good to see this progressing.

I've just seen another one.

3) After shutting down. (Close both batch and main CSE app. with top right check box.) I had two empty dialog boxes on the screen, no meaningful content. Attempting to close them gave me a third dialog, all three changed to a purple colour and lost their trim. I resorted to Task Manager to kill them. One kill closed all three boxes.

Thanks... looks like a bug. I will get it fixed.

Do you have any suggestion for improvement for this?

I think I've seen this as well. I don't know what's causing it. I suspect it might be a component I use but I am not sure how to fix this one. :(

I'll keep it in mind and try to make a good effort to find the cause before the final release or sooner if I can.

The first thought that came into my head about the brightness-colour contrast warning was.

Developer puts comments into CSS sheet. Two options: Switch that check off for whole sheet, OR switch it off per item.

(Other thoughts were: exclusions listed inside CSE, in batch definition file put a flag on specific files (batch only unfortunately) AND tunable settings for the test.)

I've not worked through this thoroughly.

Thanks Mike. I've fixed the @import bug for the next BETA. UPDATE: BETA 2C is now available which fixes this bug.

As for the color checking, comments may be easiest to implement, so that the check can be turned off for certain sections. I'll make a note about this for possible future implementation. In the mean time, if you have any other ideas about how to address this, then please let me know. Thanks!

I quickly checked background to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 by reading the 1999 W3C document and the techniques published with it.

What I saw doesn't give details of the algorithms to determine whether colours are too close.

Do you have a reference for the algorithms so that I can grok this better? (I imagine something like a 3D space represented, maybe, like the Polar form of complex numbers but with...)

Sure, I used this as a basis for the WCAG 1.0 checks:
http://www.w3.org/TR/AERT#color-contrast

Two colors provide good color visibility if the brightness difference and the color difference between the two colors are greater than a set range.

Color brightness is determined by the following formula:
((Red value X 299) + (Green value X 587) + (Blue value X 114)) / 1000
Note: This algorithm is taken from a formula for converting RGB values to YIQ values. This brightness value gives a perceived brightness for a color.

Color difference is determined by the following formula:
(maximum (Red value 1, Red value 2) - minimum (Red value 1, Red value 2)) + (maximum (Green value 1, Green value 2) - minimum (Green value 1, Green value 2)) + (maximum (Blue value 1, Blue value 2) - minimum (Blue value 1, Blue value 2))

The rage for color brightness difference is 125. The range for color difference is 500.
