Sorting routine (suggestion)

Postby John Van Duffel » Mon Apr 19, 2010 3:36 am

Our pages are changed frequently and have to present quite a list of items in an alphabetical order.

Would it be possible to have a sorting routine in a future version of CSE HTML Validator?

The idea is to sort selected lines either ascending or descending. Preferably this option should not only be available on the task bar, but also while right clicking a selection.

Many thanks!

Hello,

Have you tried selecting the lines you want to sort and then right-clicking and choosing an option in Selection->Sort Lines? This sounds like it may do what you want.

Hi Albert,

Many thanks.

This feature was exactly what we were looking for. I could not find a discription of this in the Help pages.

By the way, would it be possible to add to the "Selection -> Change Case" line a Capitalize function which changes selected text into "Words With A Capital Letter"?

Great! I'm glad it was what you were looking for. I've made some updates to the v10 BETA documentation, one of which is adding a "sorting lines" entry to the index.

Possibly. Can you give me some more examples of actual text you want to change and what you want the results to be? One easy function that might work would be to just change the first character following any whitespace character to uppercase (if it's a lowercase character) and leave everything else alone. Does this sound like it would do what you want?

Our website (internet bookshop) uses copied and pasted information from various sources. The intention is to present this information as uniform as possible, including:

- names of persons: GEORGE WASHINGTON -> George Washington

- geographical names: DALLAS, TEXAS -> Dallas, Texas

- book titles: Twenty ways to stay young -> Twenty Ways To Stay Young

- makes: CHRYSLER -> Chrysler

For this kind of editing the Capitalize function is really useful. It is standard in some other text/HTML editors.

Thanks for the examples. I see that it would not only have to capitalize the first letter but also lower the other letters of each word. I'll see if I can get this into the next BETA.

UPDATE: This has been added for the next v10 BETA.
