Sitemap Generator

Thanks Albert,
CSE HTML Validator Pro has saved my bacon more that once. It works like a charm.

Currently I'm looking for a "Good" sitemap generator. I know there are free apps on the web but they don't always work very well. Any helpful suggestions?

Also, I don't know or where to install Google's Python version(I'm not a programmer). Sounds a bit complicated to me.

I think Albert should create one that is part of/or an addition to CSE HTML Validator Pro. He does such a good job.

I'm in the market for a "Good" sitemap generator, one that is equal to CSE HTML Validator Pro.

Any suggestions?

Some time ago I was looking for a sitemap generator for a company that is a heavy publisher on the Internet but does not have programmers.

The brief was basically, quick cheap and effective. (Sitemaps were essential to avoid some problems they had.)

In this case I wasn't going to write code and maintain it.

After a search I went for the Google tool.

It didn't do exactly what I wanted (it produced some unwanted content, that couldn't easily be turned off) but it fit the bill best.

Setting it up didn't take long. In essence it was: install Python, create setup information and a batch file to run it, experiment with the tool, write a set of operating instructions and give one training session. The main user was able to reconfigure the setup details after a directory structure change (without any assistance). I remember there was some default setting that automatically published to the live site that I disabled. The tool is run once a month.

Suggestion, although it may not be ideal, the Google tool might be worth considering. (A thorough search might come up with something better but don't hold your breath waiting for it.)

If you write your own code you can put together a sitemap generator that does exactly what you want. (There are code libraries to make this easier and they let you avoid some of the unexpected things in the specifications! I'd guess the libraries can save you more than half of the development time.) (I wrote one using Powershell at one time.)

The amount of time it would take me to figure out the how-to's, and where-to's, ... I might be better off with one that doesn't work well. At least I can modify the output.
