BETA Feature/Bug History
CSE HTML Validator is Cleaning Up the Web!

BETA Feature and Bug History (v5.50)

General Notes
  • The validator will only support the English language in the immediate future. Whether other languages will eventually be supported has not yet been decided, however.
  • Documentation will not be fully updated until a release candidate or non-BETA release version is available.
  • Other applications that include integrated support for HTML Validator should work with v5.5x if they have been written correctly.
  • BETA versions of CSE HTML Validator Professional will expire on a certain date.
  • All 5.50 BETA versions will accept a v5.0x key. This means that you must be licensed to use v5.0x in order to test v5.50 BETA. The non-BETA release version will require another new and different registration key than the 5.50 BETA versions. These keys will be available to qualified registered users from the automatic registration key sender. You will have to request that your new key be sent from the CSE HTML Validator Registration Key Request page.
  • Information in the history below for versions that have not yet been made available is tentative.

Program History
Version 5.50 BETA 5 (not yet released)
  • New User Inserter like the Tag Inserter and CSS Inserter, except that it allows users to configure their own custom inserter. The configuration for the User Inserter is not lost when reinstalling or upgrading HTML Validator like it is with the other inserters.
  • Improved syntax checking.
  • This version does not expire.
Version 5.50 BETA 4 (released August 16, 2002)
  • Bug fixes:
    • Fixed a bug with the "img" tag name program and an error message referring to an undefined symbol name "appendmsg".
    • Fixed a syntax highlighting problem when opening certain documents from the web. The problem occasionally caused the correct syntax highlighting parser not to be used.
    • When validating with the Batch Wizard using Validate with Batch Wizard or Validate All with Batch Wizard, the previous validation mode was not considered.
  • Improved syntax checking:
    • New "Standards compliant check" mode that disables categories like Internet Explorer Extensions and Netscape Extensions.
    • New and "Search engine messages only" mode.
    • New tag name program function: activateCategories()
    • Improved XHTML syntax checking.
  • Displays a progress bar when checking links in the Batch Wizard
  • Now requires a new key which will be the same key as that used by all v5.5x release versions.
  • Improved navigation in multiple page Batch Wizard reports. There is now a link to the previous report page and next report page, and the report page navigation links are displayed at the top and bottom of each report page.
  • Expires September 30th, 2002.
Version 5.50 BETA 3 (released July 26, 2002)
  • Bug fixes:
    • Miscellaneous bug fixes
  • Improved syntax checking:
    • New tag name program flags: 108, 109
    • Improved CSS syntax checking.
    • Improved XHTML syntax checking
  • SIGNIFICANT NEW FEATURE - Easily disable or change the message type of most messages, on an individual message basis. To do this, bring up the context menu (right-click on the message) for a validator message and menu items will appear (not for all messages) that let you disable the specific message or change its type (such as from a warning to an error).
  • New validation modes: "Accessibility messages only" and "Deprecation messages only"
  • Added keyboard navigation to easily change result window pages.
  • When reloading a document, the document is automatically revalidated upon a successful reload if it was previously validated.
  • If a document is validated in "Errors only" mode, "Errors and warnings only" mode, or other mode, CSE remembers this so if the document is revalidated, it is revalidated using the same mode.
  • Updated documentation now includes more information about what the standard edition supports.
  • Expires September 15th, 2002.
Version 5.50 BETA 2 (released June 27, 2002)
  • Bug fixes:
    • Fixed bug that, in a certain case, caused a failure to detect a changed Batch Wizard Target List if the HTML report filename was changed in the Target List Options Tab of the Batch Wizard.
    • Fixed some CSS parser bugs that caused incorrect error messages to be generated in certain circumstances.
    • Fixed a bug that caused certain valid entities in attribute value strings not to be recognized as such.
    • Fixed a CSS parser bug that in rare circumstances causes HTML Validator to freeze.
  • Improved syntax checking:
    • New tag name program flags: 96-107
    • Updated some messages with CSS information.
    • Improved XHTML Basic support through flag 101 and other modifications.
    • Added 60 CSS syntax checker flags numbered 600-659.
    • New CSS checker flag: 600
  • Batch Wizard
    • Improved Batch Wizard output by using CSS. You can now modify an external stylesheet that is used for the reports, or specify different ones to use for different target lists. This lets you easily change the look (such as fonts and colors) of the reports.
    • Can now specify strings to exclude certain targets from processing. This lets you exclude certain directories. If a target begins with one of these strings, then it is not processed.
  • When checking documents in certain other programs, such as HomeSite, HTML Validator now tries to recognize CSS documents and switch to the CSS style sheet checker.
  • Other miscellaneous improvements.
  • This version expires August 15, 2002.
Version 5.50 BETA 1 (released 2002-05-27)
  • Bug fixes:
    • The CSS syntax checker now correctly recognizes certain colors such as aquamarine, blueviolet, goldenrod, greenyellow, ButtonShadow, HighlightText, MenuText, WindowText, and others.
    • The CSS syntax checker displayed a wrong error message if the "border" property value was incorrect. The correct error message is now displayed.
    • The HTML parser now recognizes "-- >" (note the space between "--" and ">") as the end of a comment.
    • Fixed a problem when right-clicking on multiple files and choosing "Edit with CSE HTML Validator Pro". This would sometimes cause crashes, start multiple instances of HTML Validator, and use too many system resources. It should now be fixed; however, to enable the fix if you have been using a previous version, you should choose Options->Registry->Add File Associations to the Registry.
  • Interface improvements:
    • New draggable and dockable menus and toolbars with Office XP theme.
    • The vertical toolbar is now optionally viewable (can be hidden).
    • New File->Printer Setup option.
    • New Shell 2 tab in the Resource Window.
    • Now asks you and allows you to run another instance of HTML Validator if HTML Validator is loaded when another instance is already running.
    • Other miscellaneous interface improvements.
  • Improved syntax checking:
    • For better CFML support, no longer generates error messages when tags beginning with "cf" are not quick closed in CFML documents.
    • Other miscellaneous improvements to the configuration file.
    • JSP tags (beginning with jsp:) will now not cause an error to be generated if they contain uppercase characters and the document is an XHTML document or the option to require lowercase tags has been checked.
    • New tag name program flags: 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95
    • Detects some invalid values of the "lang", "hreflang", and "xml:lang" attributes.
  • Smarter text inserter now inserts XHTML compliant tags when an XHTML document (as specified in the DOCTYPE) is being edited. For example, using the Tags menu or the Tag Inserter to insert a <br> tag into an XHTML document with an XHTML DOCTYPE will insert "<br />" and the case will not be changed to uppercase even if the option to do so is enabled.

Configuration File History
The configuration for v5.5x will not be backward compatible with v5.0x or earlier. However, v5.5x will accept older configuration files.
  • Many miscellaneous changes and improvements such as updated messages.
  • Bug fixes
    • Fixed a bug that caused the message for flag 39 to be disabled if flag 5 was disabled.
  • IFRAME
    • Changed "hspace", "vspace", and "bordercolor" to the Microsoft IE Extensions category
    • Added "application" attribute as IE 5.0 extension.
    • Added "allowtransparency" attribute as IE 5.5 extension.
