Re: XHTML5

My pages were valid XHTML1.1 until a year back. When HTML Validator added support for HTML5, I simply added the new tags, and removed the deprecated ones to match HTML5. When I used HTML Validator to check my syntax, I got a royal mess as I didn't know whether to move to HTML5 or stick with XHTML ru...

Re: XHTML5

Reopening the old topic. I just tried v11 and I still want to use XHTML5. When I use <!DOCTYPE xhtml> , I get this warning [65] This document's DOCTYPE is not a recognized DOCTYPE and may not be valid. Note that most DOCTYPEs are treated as being case-sensitive. See the description of flag 65 in the...

Re: Pedantic musings

Hi Albert, Thanks for the replies. 1. IMG vs OBJECT I just tested it out with IE8; and IE8 does serve up a PNG image, but it does have some quirks (treats it like a QuickTime application initally; the height and width should be specified, and a no-border css value should be present) I recommend that...

Re: XHTML5

Mike, there isn't a doctype specifically for XHTML5. Some sites mention that the doctype can be omitted for XHTML, while others such as Wikipedia state that <!DOCTYOE html> (case sensitive) should keep XHTML folks happy. I'm having a mess trying to upgrade from XHTML1.1+RDFa to XHTML5+RDFa at the mo...

Re: Channel Definition Format / rel=offline

Thanks Albert, that should be good.

Mike, I can't find any literature as to why CDF was abandoned. It was free from patents, and I can't see why it didn't catch on whilst RSS did. Do you have any information why CDF flopped?

Thanks!

Re: Pedantic musings

As per Wikipedia, I believe most popular elements of SVG are widely supported by standards-compliant browsers today. The upcoming IE9 promises native SVG rendering, so its just a matter of time before SVG becomes commonplace. I serve use a PHP content negotiation script to serve up SVG, application/...

Pedantic musings

There are many people out there (like me, for instance) who use CSE-HV, to get websites to validate under the most stringent conditions. I was wondering if you could help add two additional messages (as suggestions) for pedants out there: 1. Use of OBJECT instead of IMG as the W3C was planning to ph...

Channel Definition Format / rel=offline

I was testing the channel definition format (CDF) -- an obsolete xml technology that IE4 once used. The tag used to mark up CDF is <link rel="offline" href="example.cdf" /> Can HTMLValidator change the error message from The "rel" attribute contains an unrecognized value "offline". Make sure this va...

XHTML5

I'm trying to use XHTML5 with my code where I've declared the doctype as <!DOCTYPE html> However if I use the validator with the doctype declaration, I get the error message "This document has an HTML DOCTYPE but uses XHTML features (such as XHTML attributes). The XHTML features and attributes shoul...

P3P bug check

I am trying to get my site P3P compatible (even though there are some who say its useless!) and I discovered a bug that HTML Validator should check for: (I discovered the bug when debugging my P3P code on the W3C site). The CP (compact policy) value must be enclosed in double quotes. Which means tha...

Re: Warnings in the beta version

Hi Albert, thanks for the quick reply. Yup, the values should be recognised by default. I have made a list of what should be recognised. *<link rel="last" href= *<link rel="P3Pv1" href= *<link rel="schema.DCTERMS" href= *<link rel="profile" href= Additionally, I would like to draw attention to the p...

Warnings in the beta version

I am using the v10.0 BETA 4 to check my code, and have the following issues. LINK I use this tag: <link rel="last" href="eng/history14.php" /> in the <head> section. HTML Validator throws this error: "The "rel" attribute contains an unrecognized value "last". Make sure this value is correct." Consid...
