File associations

Hello all,

I run version 9+ but a friend who has bought ver 10.011 ( on my recommendation) has no facility on his options TAB drop down to set file associations.

When he updated there was "No" option to select file associations at install (is there on initial install?).

He has looked through all his drop down menus to find the "File Associations" command which is clear in version 9.

Assuming they are somewhere, can you advise please.

Further I am not surprised in this day and age to find yet another command in software (many are the same not picking on validator) which has been moved and or the logical name has been changed to something different by software writers making it a pain to find for customers.

My friend may of course have made a mistake and its there in a different column,, but even then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, why change it?

Kind regards,

John

Hi John,

I'm sorry for the confusion.

There are no file association options in the setup program.

in v10, your friend probably wants to go to Options->Editor Options and the subpages under the Files node.

If you notice, aside from the options dialogs, CSE HTML Validator v10 should look very much like v9. I try to keep everything the same unless there is a good reason to change it. The reason the options dialogs were changed is to better organize the options, to allow the main options dialogs to be resized, and to allow easier addition of options for new features in the future.

I hope this helps, and thanks for recommended CSE HTML Validator!

Hello Albert,

Thank you for fast reply, appreciated.

Having used Validator now for,, it must be more than 10 years and nearer 15,,, I cannot recall any time when I would have wanted validator "Not" to be available on the tool bar for quick drop down when writing code with notepad,, I use notepad because there are some useful shortcuts key strokes.

I really think that Validator File associations are a fundamental requirement for webmasters,, not being associated with your browser makes extra work,, and your previous versions were correct in my opinion in offering the option to associate when installing and easily afterwards.

Personally I would make it a default value with a tick box to remove,, and then also include it in the actual programmes "Options" in its own right as before,, as it is its essentially hidden,, (we could not find it and we are quite experienced) and new users who may not even know its there,,, would “Not” be using Validator in the really easy way it can be used,, thus not liking it as much,, bad for your sales.

To new users I would say make sure you have file associations active.

When in explorer you then simply click the down arrow by the edit command and select Validator,, validator will then turn on and you simply need to click the Validate button, job done bar what you need to do.

Exiting the programme via the good old red X box in the top right hand corner gets you the,,, "Do you want to save your changes question" which of course is a yes, clicking refresh in your browser bar then lets you see the results fast and easy.

Firefox and others I cannot speak for as it seems the edit command does not have a drop down for other files,, unless it needs to be activated somehow,, I could not see how with a fairly quick look around it,, I use explorer however but all to their own taste of course.

Thank you again Albert for your fast reply,, we have now located the command and job done.

Kind regards,

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that the File Association options are hidden and I will consider a way to make them less hidden, perhaps by directly asking the user if they want to add them (though I am concerned that new users are already "bombarded" by a lot of tips & other questions- but I'm sure there must be a good way to throw another question in there :D ).
