Anyone still using Windows XP?

Post by Albert Wiersch »

The next major release of CSE HTML Validator will likely drop official support for Windows XP. It will probably still run on it, but it won't be tested to any significant degree.

Is there anyone here who still develops web content using Windows XP? If so, then what are your concerns about using an operating system no longer receiving updates and why haven't you switched to a newer OS?

Thanks.

Still using XP on pc as it's not really up to spec for W7 and can't afford a replacement! Have no major concerns about XP at this stage as keep other programs up to date with patches and stay away from dodgy sites!

According to http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating ... share.aspx In April 2014 XP was the second most common OS after Windows 7. Running on over 25% of desktop OS's.

That same page has a trend line too. (Shows 37.17% down to 26.29% in 10 months, at that rate it would be about 20 months to hit 5%. It's a very crude estimate though!!)

I run XP on an old machine at work. It makes sense that XP would still have such a large user base because of foreign countries and older handed down systems.

UPDATE: While CSE HTML Validator v15 and v16 don't officially support Windows XP, I expect them to still work on Windows XP as long as you have SP3 (Service Pack 3) installed. If you have any issues then please respond here.

Interesting to see the trends
http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating ... share.aspx shows XP more than halved in the 17 months since post above
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/?platform=pc shows Win 10 / 64 at over 25% in a gamer market and XP at about 2.7%
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp also shows XP at about 2.7%, probably a technical audience
http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-CN-monthly-200807-201510 Statcounter shows a lot of things, if you do some work. The first bit of work is that they appear to have lost programming resources so Win 10 is lumped with Other. (My guess: Loss of technical may be a sign that they are about to fold.) Given that, China result appears to show Win 7 users going to either Win 10 or to XP. (I have not researched that any further, but it does look weird!) The tool allows you to compare worldwide and countries so helps to understand what is going on.

I took a look at StatOwl, but they appear to have discontinued showing anything worth looking at. Anybody here know what they are doing?
