Which doctype should you use in HTML emails?

We probably send a LOT more emails than most sites. We send emails to customers, receipt emails for payments, notice emails if they have a report to view, emails to Sales from our Contact Us page. I always assumed html4 or no doctype was the best route and have read that table layout is best for compatibility. So reading that html5 is probably a safe bet is good news.
