Web Page (Error) not loading

Post by Dplopes » Tue Apr 14, 2009 1:10 pm

 I have a prblem I hope someone can help me with. I have made several web pages using LDS Genealogy templates and they work fine, but the last time I tried to make a web page it would open in IE 8 but I could not get it to link to the next page. I used check linker and they are fine except for the new web page which it won't even read. I tried CSE lite to validate the pages and they work fine but the pages still do not link (is it IE 8?0 or do I have another problem.
I have done this several times in the past and the web pages made then still work fine but the new ones no longer work when I changed the names of the files as I have done in the past. I checked all the links and spelling, I validated them, I used tidy to check as well. All the settings appear correct but the web pages I recently changed do not link to one other., even though I can open one page at a time in IE 8.? What can I do?
Thanks

If you post more details, like the important bits of a sample page, is this testing on a web server or file server, your directory structure...

Somebody may be able to help.

I did get an error message that stated the page was not a recognizable file type?

That's a clue. One thought that popped into my mind is did you actually name the files "jc4.htm#4340" or "jc4.htm"? The actual filenames should not have the anchor parts in them (should have "#4340"). The filename in your filesystem should be "jc4.htm".

When you link with an "a" tag, then you can use the anchors and the "#4340" part.

In answer to your question, I only renamed the file. I.E. index.htm became indexjc.htm, page pafg01.htm became jc1.htm.
I have done this in the past and the pages worked then but this time they do not link to each other as I can only open one page at a time on IE 8.
I know about the "Document type" but haven't changed it yet, as I was checking my pages first. I can make a clone of the LDS file but the minute I change the file names it stops working. It works initially before I make any changes? I do not know why.
Would you like a copy of the original file before I changed the name? I have attached it to this one.

It still works fine but I need to change the file names as I already have an index file linking all my pages.
Thanks for your response.

Are these files on a publicly accessible server anywhere?

Can you zip up some files from your site and make them available so the problem can be reproduced on another system?

If I or someone else can reproduce the problem, then it will be much easier to find the cause.

As soon as I find a zip file, I will forward the files to you.

How do I send the zipped files to you? I do not seem to be able to attach them to this format.
Can I e-mail them to you? Can you send me an e-mail and I will respond to that? Dplopes@comcast.net
Thanks

OK, I emailed you.

You could also place the ZIP file on a server and provide the link if you have access to one.

Thanks. I got them. The problem seems to be that your renamed files end in "html". The original files end in "htm". It appears that:

1. You should have kept the "htm" extension when renaming the files (instead of changing them to "html"), or
2. You should have changed the extension on the links to the renamed files to "html" to match the new filenames.

I hope this helps!

I am entirely lost at this point. How do I save the file with just htm? The options do not allow that. I get html, htm and a few others when ever I try to save the file.
If I type htm it adds an extension?
I am totally lost
thanks again for the response.

In CSE HTML Validator, if you go to File->Save As and type in the filename that you want to save (like index.htm) and then click Save, does it not work?

Perhaps you have the setting to hide file extensions checked? Turning that off may make your life easier. :D To turn it off, go to Windows Explorer, choose Tools->Folder Options, View tab and uncheck the option to hide extensions for known file types. Note: I used Vista to generate these instructions so it may be a little different on other OSes.

Albert, thanks - I actually have some of the pages working, NOT all yet but I am sure it is the extension. I will check and re-save them as HTM's, whcih seems to make them work together.
Why they don't all work is beyond me but we are making progress and again I thank you.
