Small icons / 4K resolution

Post by computix »

The icons of CSE HTML validator are quite small, when I use my new 4K display.

It would be nice to be able to make them bigger.

(I use V17.05)

Hello,

I'm sorry for the trouble.

I tested this on my 4K display. CSE HTML Validator should switch to larger icons when running above a certain DPI and 4K should definitely "qualify" for those larger icons.

Are you able to provide a screen shot or can you describe the icon or icons that are too small?

Hello,

Thank you for the screen shot.

Please right-click on your Desktop and go to 'Display settings'. What is the 'Change the size of text, apps, and other items' option set to? On my 4K test system it's 175%. If you're running at 100% or near 100% then this (small icons) is the normal behavior due to this setting.

Thank you. I switched to 150% and see the problem. CSE HTML Validator is not switching to the larger icons when it probably should do so at 150%. If you want me to send you an update to address this then please email me what edition you want the update for and I'll get one to you. Please email me at support at htmlvalidator dot com.

UPDATE: The next major release (v18/2018) will use the larger icons at 150% and higher so they'll be activated a little sooner (at a lower DPI) than in v17.

You're welcome! The change will be in the next major release. Note that no further v17.0x releases are planned.

I did some testing on my notebook which has a high DPI display and I think the smaller icons are better at 150% and below but it is "borderline" and may depend on the user's display and their preference for smaller/larger icons. Your display must be at exactly 144 PPI (150%). Any higher than that and it will use the larger icons but at exactly 150% 2019/v19 won't (unlike 2018/v18).

Perhaps the best solution is to add the option for better user control via a 'registry entry hack'. Would this work for you?

Yes, I still use exactly 150 %.

It would be nice to have a menu option like "View - Toolbars - Big Icons", so it can be changed if needed.

Thanks. The next update will have a 'View->Toolbars->Force Bigger Icons' option.
