The next minor update of CSE HTML Validator (which will be v16.04) will support CSS variables.
I was wondering if anyone here uses them or has played with them? Of course the biggest problem is browser support. No version of Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge supports CSS variables... but current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari do support them.
Here are some good links:

This person thinks they're a bad idea:

Re: CSS Variables
Interesting. I would think a preprocessor would make more sense, but as much as it interests me, I haven't tackled it yet.
