I got a $289 snail mail invoice from Domain Networks. Is it a scam?

Post by Albert Wiersch »

I received what looked like an important invoice for one of my domain names from "Domain Networks" (with an invoice "mail to" address in Hendersonville, NC, 28793).

I looks to me like Domain Networks is trying to trick me into paying this fake invoice that looks like a domain renewal invoice.

While it's clearly marked "MARKETING SERVICES" in the top right corner (assuming for legal protection), everything else about it looks like a ploy to trick and deceive people and companies into paying what looks like an important invoice to renew or maintain their domain name.

In reality, it is likely to be worthless or near-worthless "marketing services" that they want you to pay $289 for. From what I can determine, it looks like it only gets you a 12-month listing in a directory on their website, which no one will probably ever see. If you pay it then you can probably expect them to keep billing you every year.

The Better Business Bureau gives Domain Networks an F rating and it currently has a customer review rating of 1.09 out of 5:

Below is the snail mail letter I recently received from Domain Networks for one of my domains:

A golden oldie. It has been several years sense I received this scam for one of my domains.
Thanks for the heads up.

It's still going around! :D

Is it just me or have scammers continually gotten more abundant over the last decade?

Just got another one of these today (March 25, 2024). This "invoice" is for htmlvalidator.com... so they are still trying.

As they continue sending, they presumably get enough money to keep going.

It would be good if there were a way to put such people out of business.

Got another one today (July 17, 2024) for another one of my domains... at least there is no inflation in the price, still $289.
