Ugh... what exactly is Norton complaining about?

Can you just get rid of Norton and use Windows Security/Microsoft Antivirus? :D

It sees malware in the tmp files
"is-oL8G4,tmp win64:malwareX-gen[Trj]" later "is-JKJE2.tmp win:MalwareX-gen[Trj]"
Their version changed sense your last update and I can't remember how to turn the damn thing off until I get the update installed. (I reached out we will see).

OK, thanks. When I run it through virustotal.com, it looks like Avast and AVG say the same thing (maybe Norton uses the same detection?) but 69 other checkers don't detect anything.

Must be. I got enough of Norton turned off to get CSS updated and running.
Turned it back on and ran a scan of the PC and Norton finds Win64:MalwareX-gen[Trj] in two places:
C:\Program Files\HTMLValidator250\chv250.exe
C:\Program Files\HTMLValidator250\cmdlineprocessor.exe

Thanks for double checking your end. I told Norton to keep the "viruses/malware" on my PC but that is going to be a forever issue. Norton has not responded. Of course they don't work on the weekend.

Thank you for the details. Did a little search and found this comment on reddit:
that's a false positive. Antivirus programs are extremely overprotective nowadays, so any program that isn't in their database and that has some online functionalities will immediatly get labeled as a "generic trojan" (that's what the -gen [Trj] stands for).
Not sure if it's true but it sure sounds like it is given my experience.

Also found this:
Norton, AVG, AVAST and AVIRA belong to the same company, GEN Digital.
And this on Wikipedia (about Gen Digital):
Its portfolio includes Norton, Avast, LifeLock, Avira, AVG, ReputationDefender, and CCleaner.
So it's probably why Avast and AVG are showing the same false positive "virus" on virustotal.com that Norton is showing. At least all the other 50+ checkers aren't showing any detected malware <knock-on-wood>.

Without notice or response to my message to them, Norton seems to have updated. I can now install and run CSS HTML.

Life in the fast lane.

That's good. Let me reanalyze the trial version on virustotal.com and see what it says...

Good news! All clear! Until the next false positive anyway.
