HomeSite Integration

CSE HTML Validator was only included with HomeSite 3.0. However, HomeSite v2.5 and above includes support for CSE HTML Validator. You can greatly improve the HTML/XHTML syntax capability of HomeSite by using the latest version of CSE HTML Validator Standard or Professional instead of the validator that comes with HomeSite. CSE HTML Validator Lite v6.5x and above will also work, but the results will not be as thorough as the standard or professional editions.

How do I tell HomeSite v5.0 (or v5.2) to use CSE HTML Validator? In HomeSite v5.0 (or v5.2), goto Options|Settings and goto the Validation Page. Check the box marked "Use CSE HTML Validator when validating the entire document." Click OK. That's it! NOTE: You must have already installed CSE HTML Validator on your system.
How do I tell HomeSite v4.0 to use CSE HTML Validator? (Not for HomeSite v3.0 or earlier) In HomeSite v4.0, goto Options|Settings and goto the Validation Tab. Check the box marked "Use CSE HTML Validator...". Click OK. That's it! NOTE: You must have already installed CSE HTML Validator on your system.
Does CSE HTML Validator v3.0 and above work with HomeSite v3.0? Yes. Simply install it and then tell HomeSite v3.0 to use the newly installed version instead of the version that comes with HomeSite by making a simple registry change which is described in a question below. CSE HTML Validator v3.0 and above is a significant upgrade from v2.5 (the version that comes with HomeSite) so you should upgrade to take advantage of the new features and better validation in v3.0 and above. To use v3.0 or above, you will need to purchase a license for the validator from AI Internet Solutions if you have not already done so. The new validator version should also work with HomeSite v4 and above.
HTML Validator states that it is not licensed for use on this system. The Allaire product that installed HomeSite should be installed under all the Windows login accounts that will use the Allaire product. Reinstall the Allaire product under the account that is causing this message to appear. If you have a registered version of the non-Allaire version of HTML Validator, you may want to tell HomeSite to use that version instead, and you will not have to reinstall the Allaire product to fix this problem. How to do this is also available in this FAQ.
What are the technical differences between the Allaire and non-Allaire versions of HTML Validator? Both versions are very similar. The non-Allaire version is only for use with a licensed Allaire product that includes the Allaire version of HTML Validator. For licensing checking, the Allaire version of HTML Validator will check to make sure that an appropriate Allaire product is installed instead of checking for a registration name and key.
How do I upgrade the Allaire version of HTML Validator? Any Allaire version upgrades will be posted to the main download page and will be clearly labeled for upgrading the Allaire version of HTML Validator only. However, most, if not all Allaire version upgrades will be available only with an Allaire upgrade of the product HTML Validator came with. Do not use a non-Allaire version upgrade to upgrade the Allaire version! However, the HTML Configuration file upgrades are compatible with both versions of HTML Validator and can be used to upgrade either version's HTML Configuration, unless noted on the download page. If you are a registered user of the non-Allaire version of HTML Validator, you may want to use it instead of the Allaire version. See the information below about how to do this.
How do I upgrade the HTML Configuration for the Allaire version of HTML Validator? The HTML Configuration format is identical for the non-Allaire and Allaire versions of HTML Validator. You can update your HTML Configuration by downloading the latest version from the main download page. For example, to upgrade the HTML Configuration for the Allaire version of HTML Validator, download the latest HTML Configuration file from the main download page and use it to replace the old HTML Configuration file which is usually located in c:\Program Files\Allaire\HomeSite\Validator\htmlval25.cfg.

How do I tell HomeSite v3 to use the non-Allaire version of the Validator? (Not for HomeSite v4)

If you have a registered version of the non-Allaire version of HTML Validator, you may wish to use it instead of the Allaire version that comes with HomeSite v3. This allows you to take advantage of the non-Allaire upgrades as they become available. To tell HomeSite v3 to use the non-Allaire version of HTML Validator, please perform the following steps:

  1. Run "regedit.exe" to edit the registry. You can do this by going to the Start|Run menu on the task bar and typing "regedit" and clicking OK.
  2. Using the Registry Editor that was just loaded, click on the plus by HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  3. Click on the plus by Software.
  4. Click on the plus by Allaire.
  5. Click on the plus by Studio.
  6. Click on FileLocations.
  7. In the other windowpane, you should see a registry entry for "ValidatorEXE". This registry entry contains the path to the HTML Validator executable that is used when a file is validated. You will need to change this to htmlval25.exe (for v2.5) or htmlval30.exe (for v3), including the path information. This depends on where you installed HTML Validator and you will have to determine this yourself. For example, usually "ValidatorEXE" should be changed to "c:\Program Files\HTMLValidator\htmlval25.exe" for v2.5, "c:\Program Files\HTMLValidator\htmlval30.exe" for v3, and "c:\Program Files\HTMLValidator4\cmdlineprocessor.exe" for v4.0+. To change it, simply double click on "ValidatorEXE" and type in the new data value. NOTE: If "ValidatorEXE" does not exist, you must add it by choosing Edit|New|String Value. Type in "ValidatorEXE" for the value and then double click on "ValidatorEXE" to change its data to the path to the HTML executable.
  8. Try validating a document within HomeSite or Cold Fusion Studio.
